In your introductory programming courses and our labs thus far, you mostly used the basic program structures of sequential, conditional, and iterative code. Event- driven programming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. In computer programming, Event- Driven programming is a programming paradigm in which the flow of the program is determined by events such as user actions (mouse clicks, key presses), sensor outputs, or messages from other programs/threads. Event- driven programming is the dominant paradigm used in graphical user interfaces and other applications (e. Java. Script web applications) that are centered on performing certain actions in response to user input. In an event- driven application, there is generally a main loop that listens for events, and then triggers a callback function when one of those events is detected. In embedded systems the same may be achieved using hardware interrupts instead of a constantly running main loop. Event-driven Programming for Robust Software Frank Dabek, Nickolai Zeldovich. When a program cannot complete an opera-. Event Driven Programming Node JsEvent- driven programs can be written in any programming language, although the task is easier in languages that provide high- level abstractions, such as closures. Event handlers. In this simple example there may be a call to an event handler called On. Key. Enter() that includes an argument with a string of characters, corresponding to what the user typed before hitting the ENTER key. To add two numbers, storage outside the event handler must be used. The implementation might look like below. Exception handlers may be provided by . These routines handle the events to which the main program will respond. For example, a single left- button mouse- click on a command button in a GUI program may trigger a routine that will open another window, save data to a database or exit the application. Many modern- day programming environments provide the programmer with event templates, allowing the programmer to focus on writing the event code. The second step is to bind event handlers to events so that the correct function is called when the event takes place. In the spirit of 'explain it like I'm 5': An event driven program's code does not run from start to finish in order. Instead the program waits for (as programmers we say 'listens for') certain events and runs code actions (as. Copy of Key Features of Event Driven Programming. No description by Adele Hanks on 12 October 2012 Tweet. TheDBguy's Access Blog. What is Event-Driven Programming? The first step in developing an event-driven program is to write a series of subroutines or procedures that will be executed once an event occurs. Graphical editors combine the first two steps: double- click on a button, and the editor creates an (empty) event handler associated with the user clicking the button and opens a text window so you can edit the event handler. The third step in developing an event- driven program is to write the main loop. This is a function that checks for the occurrence of events, and then calls the matching event handler to process it. Most event- driven programming environments already provide this main loop, so it need not be specifically provided by the application programmer. RPG, an early programming language from IBM, whose 1. I/O loop (known as the . A thread context only needs a CPU stack while actively processing an event, once done the CPU can move on to process other event- driven threads, which allows an extremely large number of threads to be handled. This is essentially a finite- state machine approach. Event Driven Programming? It understands only enough, that it can dispatch the right events for the data. So for example, if event is triggered by data coming from a socket, all the event loop needs to know is, what callback to call, when data comes from that particular socket. Typically the event loop is in some library, such as libevent. So application code consists of just setup code and event handlers which are called by the event loop in the library. Since you mention threads: a classic simple event driven application is single threaded. Each event handler or callback just does its thing as fast as it can, when it gets called, and returns. Blocking or waiting or sleeping is a big no no, it will block all other events! Threads are often used, when there is some processing which takes long time. If it were done in the main thread with event loop, the long operation would have to be chopped into small pieces, so other events could be handled too. So it's simpler to have a worker thread, which can do the processing without interfering with event processing, and then generate event for main event loop when done. Other case of using threads is, when there is something which must block. It may for example be some other library, which only provides a blocking API. If that API was to be used from the main thread event loop, it would block other events. Solution is to use that library from another thread, which can block, and then generate event for the main event loop when there's something interesting for other parts of the application. But in a sense, event driven architecture is sort of opposite of multi- threaded architecture: In straightforward multi- threaded architecture, each thread waits for one kind of thing to process (a wait condition or a blocking queue or a blocking socket read or whatever, possibly with timeout to periodically check something), then does the processing, possibly signals other threads, and goes back to waiting. One thread does one thing, and there's a thread for each different kind of thing to do. In event driven architecture there's just one main event loop (usually from a library) which waits for all kinds of events and calls handlers, all in the same thread. One thread does everything, and there's a non- blocking event handler for each different things to do. The good thing about this is, no synchronization is needed, because it's all in one thread, which avoids all- too- common multi- threading bugs, keeps code simpler and avoid synchronization overhead. Downside is not taking advantage of multiple CPU cores, and risk of blocking event loop if developer is careless. Of course a complex application can have several event loops in different threads, and also threads which do just single thing, so these can be mixed. Urschel, “Understanding and Improving Full- Time Virtual Schools: A study of student characteristics, school finance, and school performance in schools operated by K1. Inc.,” National Education Policy Center, School of Education, University of Colorado- Boulder (July 2. Checked by Matthew M. Chingos. Proponents of school choice have sought for at least two decades to expand the education options available to families who lack the financial means to move to a neighborhood with high- quality public schools or to pay private- school tuition. Forty- one states and the District of Columbia now allow the founding of charter schools, which enrolled just over 2 million students in 2. Some states have voucher- type programs that enable children to use public funding to attend private schools, and some districts allow students to attend a traditional public school other than the one in their neighborhood. Families certainly have more education options for their children than they did 2. In rural communities, it may not make financial sense to have more than one school, and even populous areas may not have enough students to support a range of schools targeted at students with different needs and interests. The potential to eliminate such geographic constraints on school choice at both the course and school levels may lie in digital learning. For instance, a student at a small high school that does not have enough students to justify offering an Advanced Placement course in physics can now take a course through an online provider if her school permits and funds such opportunities. In 3. 1 states, students can enroll in a full- time virtual school, often from anywhere in the state, free of limitations based on geography or the physical constraints of a building. Full- time virtual schools have gone from barely a blip on the radar screen a decade ago to enrolling approximately 2. The schools have attracted the kind of scrutiny that most new innovations receive before they have an established track record of success (or fail and die out). The fact that many virtual schools are operated by for- profit education management organizations (EMOs) has surely contributed to the degree of scrutiny, prompting such publications as a recent report by the National Education Policy Center (NEPC) on the largest operator of these schools, K1. Inc. The NEPC report presents data from a variety of public sources on a portion of the schools operated by K1. Thinking of hiring a virtual assistant but not sure where to turn? The report contains some useful descriptive information on the population of K1. The NEPC report uses badly flawed measures of school performance that provide little information about how much students learn as a result of attending K1. Consequently, it is unclear how to interpret the report’s comparisons of school finances without knowing whether K1. The NEPC Report. Written by Gary Miron and Jessica Urschel, NEPC’s July 2. Understanding and Improving Full- Time Virtual Schools,” is billed as a “systematic review and analysis of student characteristics, school finance, and school performance of K1. These three sections of the report use publicly available data to compare K1. The report first examines students’ demographic characteristics using data from the 2. Compared to all students in the same states, students at K1. Hispanic (1. 0 vs. K1. 2 students are modestly less likely to participate in the federal free or reduced- price lunch program (4. English language learners (less than 1 vs. K1. 2 students are disproportionately enrolled in the middle grades rather than in the elementary or high- school grades. The NEPC report’s analysis of revenues and spending in 2. K1. 2 schools in five states (representing approximately 6. K1. 2 enrollment nationwide) due to data constraints. The available data indicate that this subset of K1. K1. 2 schools spend more on instructional costs but less on teacher salaries and benefits, and more on administration but less on administrator salaries and benefits. The NEPC report refers to these differences as cost advantages and disadvantages. For example, the fact that K1. Finally, the NEPC report summarizes a number of measures of what it calls “school performance.” In 2. K1. 2 schools made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the federal No Child Left Behind accountability law, compared to 5. In the same year, only 1. K1. 2 schools rated by state education agencies (7 out of 3. Many of these ratings reflect the fact that K1. High- school students at K1. Measuring School Quality. The NEPC report paints a dismal picture of student learning at K1. What parents and policymakers need to know about a school is how much its students learn relative to what they would have learned at the school they would otherwise have attended. In the case of virtual schools, policymakers need to know how well the students at those schools do relative to how they would have done if the virtual schools didn’t exist. The measures used in the NEPC report—whether schools make AYP, state accountability system ratings, the percentage of students that score proficient on state tests, and high- school graduation rates—are at best rough proxies for the quality of education provided by any school. Using these metrics to compare one group of schools to another is as potentially misleading as inferring that private schools are better simply because their students score higher than their public- school counterparts on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Rigorous efforts to measure school quality focus instead on the growth in individual students’ scores on standardized tests from one year to the next. These “value- added” measures are subject to some of the same problems, but by focusing on what students learn over the course of the year, they are a significant improvement over a simple average test score (or, worse yet, the percentage of students that score above an arbitrary “proficiency” threshold). These measures can be adjusted for student background characteristics. However, such adjustments are particularly challenging in the case of virtual schools, because their students may be less likely to participate in some of the programs that are used to measure student backgrounds, such as the federal lunch program. In addition to using poor performance measures, the NEPC report makes highly questionable comparisons between K1. Parents don’t choose between a virtual school and any school in the state, but rather between a virtual school and the schools in the vicinity of where they live. A credible measure of the effectiveness of a virtual school would compare the achievement growth of students at that school to the performance of students in the schools those students would have attended otherwise. These comparison schools may look very different from the average school in the state, especially if families are most likely to choose the virtual option when their traditional options are unsatisfactory. Measures of school performance based on carefully constructed comparisons of student achievement growth, and other important outcomes, such as high- school graduation and college enrollment rates, require student- level data that are not publicly available. Most states now have such information in their longitudinal databases, but no published studies have used these data to compare the achievement growth of students at virtual schools with demographically similar students at carefully selected comparison schools. Research that painstakingly tries to separate out the actual effects of schools clearly has value, but it is important to bear in mind that, in the absence of random assignment of students to schools (such as occurs via charter school lotteries), families that choose for their children to be educated in their home (through virtual schools) are likely to be very different from other families. The parents of virtual- school students need to provide (or arrange for) supervision of their children during the school day. These families may use virtual schools as a form of home- schooling, or as a way to provide stability for students whose parents frequently relocate, for example. Assembling descriptive information about the students attending virtual schools is a necessary first step to designing such careful comparisons. The NEPC report provides some basic demographic information, such as race/ethnicity, and data on participation in programs, such as free and reduced- price lunch and special education. These data are a useful starting point, but may be confounded by comparisons to statewide averages instead of to the other schools in these students’ neighborhoods as well as the differences in program participation discussed earlier. A useful addition would be data based on surveys of parents with children enrolled in virtual schools and in their brick- and- mortar counterparts. Comparing Finances. The NEPC report presents information comparing the finances of a subset of K1. K1. 2 schools. If a rigorous study found that K1. But the NEPC report contains no information that can be used to accurately measure the effect of K1. The comparison of specific categories of expenditures is also difficult to interpret, in large part due to the fundamentally different instructional and operational models of virtual and brick- and- mortar schools. It is misleading to refer to all differences in spending as “cost advantages and disadvantages,” when many of them reflect choices made by schools. The unsurprising fact that virtual schools do not spend much on transportation or food services likely reflects a true cost advantage of the virtual model. But differences in spending on teacher salaries as compared to student support services are not necessarily cost advantages or disadvantages, but rather decisions made by the school. Describing differences in expenditures in this way is also confounded by differences in the overall amounts of funding provided to virtual and traditional schools. California Virtual Campus. Music video by August Burns Red performing Fault Line.I just want to start off by saying how great this entire album is. If you have liked their previous albums you will be 1. However; the reason I only give it 4 stars is because almost every single song has some sort of “slow down” part in the middle of it. And I know, that’s like ABR’s thing and they like to try new things. But how new is it at this point? I’m bringing this up because every song on this album is such a jam and shreds so hard and every time the momentum gets lost along the way with these slow down clean parts. They are all different and they sound cool but when you’re expecting it on every song it gets kind of old and annoying. Rescue and Restore was a great album, but again almost every song had a slow down part. PA’s August Burns Red were, to the naked eye, just another young band jockeying for position in the modern. I think the reason Messengers and Constellations were so amazing is because these clean parts were few and far between, where you would hear them in 2 or 3 songs and be surprised. They make up for it with the awesome riffs and stuff but I just miss the songs that were heavy all the way through, like a majority of them used to be. August Burns Red - Lost Messengers The Outtakes ABR Never, ever, ever, ever disappoint!! Had the privilege to listen to the whole album and they absolutely have done it again! Probably the best work yet. We are witnessing a band who is head and shoulders above everyone else in the genre at a time when pretty much all music is gone severely down hill. These guys keep freaking bringing it!! ABR has defined themselves as a great band that shreds hard and has meaningful lyrics, and they have a unique sound to them, as all good bands do. However, despite being around for over a decade and establishing this sound, they always find a way to bring something completely fresh in each of their new albums. This album is no exception; rather, it is the epitome. Each song stands out in its own way, and now that I've gushed about how I feel, here's a brief description of the songs: The Wake- When the first word of the song is . This song is really heavy, and has a really good, somewhat unexpected, breakdown near the beginning. Martyr- One of my favorites, also really heavy, but it has a part in the middle where it slows down and is really jazzy. Identity- Great lyrically, has a sort of melodic heaviness to it. Also has a surfer- type riff. Separating the Seas- Ever dream of a waltz in the middle of a heavy song? Listen to this one to fulfill that dream. Creative, dark, and heavy. Jeremy Mc. Kinnon)- Another one of my favorites. A really good, dark intro, and a good build up. Has clean vocals and harmonizing screams, which are on point. Majoring In the Minors- Reminiscent of songs from Meddler until the Western- style riff smack dab in the middle of the song. Weird, but cool and well executed. Everlasting Ending- Reminds me of songs from Constellations, but not as heavy. Has more of the harmonized screams, and has a nice twangy part in the middle, which is a common theme in this album. Broken Promises- This song doesn't screw around. Right from the start it's really heavy, the lyrics have a lot of conviction behind them, and the whole thing has a sort of progressive metal vibe. Blackwood- Probably my favorite on the album. Has a really calm beginning that cascades into a heavy breakdown in an instant. Vanguard- The screaming lead guitar in this one was just fun to listen to. Another one of my favorites. Marathon- Just a good, classic sounding ABR song. Majoring In the Minors (Reprise)- Acoustic/clean version, but with a little extra spice. AUGUST BURNS RED - CONSTELLATIONS 2. Thirty and Seven 0. Ocean of Apathy 0. Marianas Trench 1.
